On Sunday afternoon, the peace and joy being shared and enjoyed at the city of Riverside’s nightly Festival of Lights celebration at the Mission Inn were temporarily ruined when two allegedly intoxicated subjects in a car put everyone’s lives at risk by their reckless behavior.

On Nov. 29, multiple citizens called the Riverside Police Dispatch Center to report a vehicle that was continually racing through the area while the occupants caused the reported disturbance in the Mission Inn area of Market Street and University Avenue.

Callers reported to 911 the driver and passenger of the vehicle were being vulgar and yelling profanities towards the families viewing the Festival of Lights while the car was being driven recklessly through the area. Callers also reported the driver of the vehicle was driving without regard for the safety of the many families in the area trying to enjoy the lights.

With assistance from the department’s Aviation Unit, the subjects were located driving the wrong way on Lemon Street. By the time patrol officers the driver and occupant had exited the vehicle.

According to a press release from the Riverside Police department, “An officer detained the passenger as he was attempting to run and another officer detained the driver as he ran away from the vehicle.”

During their subsequent investigation officers determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol and the passenger was intoxicated. Both were arrested and booked into Robert Presley Detention Center.
