TEMECULA: Two pedestrians injured after being struck and trapped underneath truck

TEMECULA – A vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision on Friday, Jan. 8, left two pedestrians with major injuries. The accident, which occurred at the intersection of Rancho California Road and Ynez Road and the subsequent accident investigation forced the temporary closure of Ynez Road.

Numerous first responders from Riverside County Fire Department, American Medical Response and Temecula Police Station responded to the accident, which was reported at 6:42 p.m. Multiple 911 callers reported a gray Dodge Ram pickup truck collided with two pedestrians in the cross walk at the intersection and that the two pedestrians were both trapped underneath the pickup truck.

Deputies, firefighters and paramedics arrived on scene and confirmed two people were trapped underneath the truck. Both pedestrians had sustained substantial injuries in the accident.

Jody Hagemann, of CAL FIRE – Riverside County Fire Department wrote that 14 firefighters from three engine companies and one truck company were needed to assist in extricating the pedestrians from underneath the truck. Hagemann wrote that the two victims were removed from underneath the truck shortly after 7:15 p.m.

According to Sergeant Chad Loeffler, of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the pedestrians, identified as a 35-year-old male and 30-year-old female, both sustained major injuries. After being safely removed from underneath the truck, both victims were evaluated and treated at the scene before they were transported to a local hospital for further medical treatment.

“The preliminary investigation at the scene revealed the driver of the truck struck the pedestrians as they began to cross the street in the designated cross walk,” Loeffler said following the incident. Loeffler advised that neither drug nor alcohol impairment were believed to have been factors in this collision.

Southbound Ynez Road at Rancho California Road was closed for approximately three hours while officers conducted an investigation into the accident.
