One dead, one critical after two-vehicle crash in Riverside

RIVERSIDE – One person was killed and another was critically injured in a traffic collision involving two vehicles at the intersection of Main Street and Placentia Lane, Sunday, June 26, at about 1:13 p.m., according to Riverside Sergeant Robert Tipre of the department’s Traffic Bureau.

Members of the Riverside Police and Fire Departments responded to reports of the collision after City of Riverside emergency dispatchers received several 911 calls regarding the tragic accident.

Upon their arrival, officers located two vehicles involved in the wreck. Officials quickly determined there had only been one victim in the two cars and both sustained major traumatic injuries in the collision.

“Based on statements and evidence at the scene, officers determined a 22-year-old male Moreno Valley resident was northbound on Main Street in his 1998 Honda Civic,” Tipre explained. “A 68-year-old female Beaumont resident turned southbound onto Main Street from Placentia Lane in her 2007 BMW 328I. The Honda could not stop in time and collided with the BMW in the intersection.”

Paramedics and fire personnel treated both victims at the scene before transporting them to Riverside Community Hospital. Both drivers were in critical condition when paramedics transported them to the hospital.

The elderly female victim later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead by hospital staff. She has not been identified pending notification of her family.

The Riverside Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene and is investigating the collision. Anyone with information about the collision or who witnessed the accident is encouraged to contact Detective Soria at (951) 826-8720.

  • How very sad. It is actually rather surprising that the one driving the HOnda survived, and the lady in the BMW, succumbed to her injuries. I guess it must have had more to do with her age than the car.
