MENIFEE – A two vehicle head-on traffic collision in the area of Newport and Goetz Roads in Menifee injured three people – one critically – Friday, Sept. 16.

The vehicles – which were both totaled – were described as a silver Chevrolet Impala and a silver unknown make or model SUV or minivan.

Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Menifee Police Station, Cal Fire/Riverside County firefighters and AMR paramedics responded to the accident at about 9:20 p.m.

When emergency first responders arrived on scene firefighters found a total of three victims, including two who were already out of their vehicle laying on the ground and one who was trapped inside their vehicle. The trapped victim required a cut and rescue extrication.

11 firefighters from two engine companies and one truck company responded to the accident scene to assist with the extrication of the trapped and critically injured victim.

All three victims were transported to area hospitals by ground ambulance. Two were listed as suffering moderate injuries.

The victim who had to be extricated from the mangled wreckage of her vehicle was transported in critical condition with major injuries, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Public Information Officer April Newman.

A witness at the scene who declined to be identified stated that the Chevy was being driven eastbound on Newport Road just past Goetz Road when the driver lost control for an unknown reason. After losing control, the car went across the road, crossed over the center median, and crashed head-on into the westbound SUV.

Deputies at the scene declined to comment about the accident, saying only that the collision was still being investigated.

Alcohol and/or drug intoxication had not been ruled out as contributing factors in the collision.

Westbound lanes of Newport Road were closed for about an hour and traffic was backed up for several miles while rescuers worked to free the trapped driver and the roadway was cleared.
