JURUPA VALLEY: Stolen vehicle leads to school lock down – 8 arrested, weapons recovered

JURUPA VALLEY – A stolen vehicle investigation in the 4000 block of Bain Street in Jurupa Valley, caused the lock down of an elementary school Thursday, Oct. 20. The investigation led to the recovery of a stolen car, numerous weapons, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. At the conclusion of the investigation deputies arrested eight people, according to Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Christian Dekker.

The investigation, that began about 10 a.m., lasted several hours and began when deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Jurupa Valley Police Station located a stolen vehicle at a residence on Bain Street.

Deputies and officers from the Riverside Auto Theft Interdiction Detail (R.A.I.D.) responded to assist in the investigation.

When officials attempted to contact the occupants at the residence “four subjects ran from the location in various directions,” Dekker wrote in a press release about the incident. The four subjects who fled from the residence began jumping walls and fences while running through back yards and private properties.

Officials detained several subjects at the residence, while others pursued the four people who ran from the residence.

“A perimeter was quickly established and, as a precaution, Mission Bell Elementary School was placed on lock down until a thorough search for the outstanding subjects could be conducted,” Dekker explained.

Steven McCary, a felon on parole, was apprehended after fleeing from a residence with a backpack filled with weapons, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a ski mask and other items.

Two of the four subjects who fled were quickly apprehended. One of the two, identified as Steven McCary, was found to be in possession of a back pack containing “numerous loaded firearms and several hundred rounds of various caliber ammunition,” according to Dekker.

A Sheriff’s K-9 handler and the Riverside Police Department’s air unit were requested to the area to assist with the search for the two outstanding suspects.

Deputies found the third subject who fled hiding in the yard of a separate residence in the 4000 block of Bain Street. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

The fourth outstanding subject was located by the K-9. He was found hiding in a vehicle parked at a residence in the 3000 block of Bain Street. “The subject refused to comply with orders and was taken into custody with the assistance of Sheriff’s K-9,” Dekker explained.

Once all four of those who had fled from the residence were located, sheriff’s officials notified the elementary school and the lock down was lifted.
