RIVERSIDE: Several hospitalized after truck plows into ambulance
RIVERSIDE — Several people, including a patient being transported to an area hospital from an unrelated medical emergency, were injured when a pickup truck smashed into an ambulance Saturday, July 22. The early-morning accident happened at the intersection of Arlington and Crest Avenues in Riverside.
Riverside Fire and Police Departments were dispatched to the scene of the accident about 2:15 a.m., after city dispatchers were notified about the collision by several motorists and other witnesses. 911 callers told emergency dispatchers a pickup truck had collided into the rear of an ambulance at the intersection and that several people from both vehicles were injured as a result of the wreck.
When they arrived at the scene, police and fire officials found a red pickup truck with major, front-end damage and an American Medical Response ambulance with minor rear-end damage.
Several additional AMR ambulances and an AMR supervisor responded to the scene to assist with assessing and treating those injured in the wreck.
At least three victims were transported by separate AMR ambulances to area hospitals. One victim reportedly sustained major injuries, the other two victims sustained minor to moderate injuries.
Firefighter/paramedics evaluated and treated both AMR medics at the scene. Neither was reportedly injured in the collision.
Officials have not ruled out alcohol or drug intoxication as possible contributing factors in the accident; the cause of which is under investigation.
