Redding police officers and other emergency first responders were dispatched to the park about 5:13 p.m., after receiving reports of a fight and stabbing that had just occurred, who Redding Police Corporal Jeff Schmidt explained after the incident.

When officers arrived witnesses directed them to the victim, later identified as 37-year-old, Brent Serrano.

Serrano had a laceration to his right knee and told investigating officers he had been stabbed during a fight with another transient. Serrano directed officers to the alleged suspect, 40-year-old, Edward Russell, who was still in the area.

“The investigation revealed Russell was harassing and attempting to fight with transients in the park,” Schmidt described, saying, “A verbal altercation broke out between Russell and another unidentified transient.”

When Serrano tried to intervene and mediate the argument, Russell directed his attack on him. Russell then grabbed a stick from the victim, which he uses to aid himself while walking, according to the Cpl. As the two men struggled over the stick, both subjects fell to the ground where the fight continued.

At some point as the two men grappled on the ground, officials say Russell stabbed Serrano.

“Several transients were in the park at the time of the incident,” Schmidt explained. In spite of witnessing the incident, most were uncooperative with the investigation and refused to provide statements to the officers.

Although officials later described Serrano’s injuries as minor, he was transported by ground ambulance to an area hospital for further treatment.

Russell was booked into the Shasta County Jail in Redding early the following morning for assault with a deadly weapon. He remains in custody, held on $25,000 bail.
