Corona PD officers were dispatched to the area shortly after 2:30 p.m, after a person called 911 to report finding what they believed was a deceased infant.

“Upon arrival, Corona Police officers were directed to the location of the infant and confirmed the infant was deceased,” Corona PD Public Information Officer Tobias Kouroubacalis explained in a press release as the investigation was getting underway.

Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner officials responded to the scene and took custody of the body to determine cause of death, according to Kouroubacalis.

Officials have not specified if the infant was believed to have died before or after being dumped in the semi-rural area on the outskirts of the city.

Corona PD used the tragic event as an opportunity to remind citizens that the City of Corona offers several Safe Surrender Sites, where parents can safely surrender an infant within 72 hours of birth, with no questions asked.

Babies can be dropped off at any fire station, police department, hospital, or anywhere with the blue Safe Surrender logo. For more information, visit Safely Surrendered Babies.

The investigation is active and ongoing and citing their continuing investigation officials have not released any further information.
