REDDING –Officials have released additional details related to yesterday’s shooting death of a man they say was fatally shot after attacking a Tehama County man who had been holding a 4-month-old infant when he came under attack. The man killed in the shooting was a registered sex offender and had a lengthy criminal history, officials later released.

Although no arrests have been made or are immediately anticipated, Redding PD’s findings will ultimately be submitted to the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office for review at the conclusion of the investigation, Redding Police Captain Eric Wallace explained earlier today in a follow-up press release to yesterday’s deadly incident.

During their initial on-scene investigation, detectives from Redding PD’s Major Crimes Unit determined 31-year-old, Travis William Hutchinson, was helping his girlfriend’s cousin study for a math test while visiting 4605 Harrison Ln.

The man killed in the incident, whose name has not been publicly released, was also at the home and “got into a fight with several other individuals who were at the house,” Wallace explained.

The fight eventually spilled out into the street after the homeowner threatened to call 911.

Hutchinson, who was holding a 4-month-old infant, stepped out onto the porch of the residence to try to convince the others to stop fighting.

For an unknown reason, the decedent “became enraged with Hutchinson,” according to Wallace, who explained the man “charged Hutchinson and began striking him in the head and face,” even though Hutchinson was still holding the infant.

“Hutchinson told investigators he was almost knocked out after being struck in the face and the infant slipped out of his hands during the attack,” Wallace continued. “He was able to catch the baby before it struck the concrete porch in front of the residence.”

Despite endangering the infant’s life, the decedent continued his attack, according to Wallace.

Fearing “for his and the infant’s life,” Hutchinson, who is a lawful concealed weapons holder and was armed with a concealed handgun, fired one round at the decedent stopping the attack.

Hutchinson’s attacker was struck in the chest and later pronounced deceased at the scene. Although Hutchinson received minor injuries during the assault, none of the witnesses or infant were injured during the violent altercation.

After shooting his attacker, Hutchinson told witnesses to call 911 and remained at the scene until police arrived.

He was eventually transported to Redding PD and provided a statement consistent with information provided by witnesses to the fatal shooting. Shasta County District Attorney’s representatives assisted with the investigation and Hutchinson was eventually released, pending the investigation’s completion and review by the DA’s Office.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or who witnessed the shooting and has not provided a statement to officials is encouraged to call the Redding Police Department at (530) 225-4256. Callers can refer to incident file number 18-60473 and can remain anonymous.

Corrected: An early version of this article indicated the shooter was arrested. He was only detained and later released.

REDDING — Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a man, whose body was found in the front yard of a private residence on the 4600 block of Harrison Ave., in Redding. The residential neighborhood where the deadly shooting happened is west of S. Market St., between El Reno Ln. and Miller St.

Officials say they detained a person related to the deadly incident and have said there are no other suspects outstanding and that no other people are believed to have been injured, but their initial, on-scene investigation is ongoing.

Redding PD officers were dispatched to the area at 6:06 p.m., after receiving a 911 call reporting shots fired at the residence, Redding Police Lt. John Poletski explained from the scene. The reported shooting brought officers converging on the neighborhood from around the city.

“Officers responded and when they arrived on scene they located one male deceased in the front yard,” Poletski explained. “They also located … the person who was pointed out to us as being the one who had shot.”

“We detained the suspect at that time,” said Poletski.

As Redding PD’s investigation was getting underway, numerous officers were seen seeking out and interviewing potential witnesses as well as others who might be able to shed light on what may have led to the deadly shooting.

Forensic technicians from the department’s Crime Scene Investigation’s team soon arrived and they, along with detectives, officers, and other officials, were seen documenting, photographing, and collecting evidence related to the fatal shooting.
