The incident began shortly before 9:30 p.m., when a Redding police officer attempted to conduct a traffic enforcement stop on a silver, 2013 Kia Optima, Redding Police Corporal Harris said after the man’s arrest.

The driver, later identified as Richard Angel Pulido, 33, of Red Bluff, refused to yield to the officer’s lights and siren and sped away from the official, at which time a brief pursuit was initiated.

During the short chase, Pulido reportedly drove in an extremely reckless manner, without regard for the safety of other citizens or pursuing officers.

“Due to the recklessness of Pulido’s driving and weather conditions, the pursuit was terminated on Hwy 44 near Victor Ave,” explained Harris.

Despite officers discontinuing their pursuit, Pulido continued westbound on Hwy 44 at a high rate of speed, according to Harris. Due to his speed and reckless driving, the fleeing man eventually lost control of his car and crashed into another vehicle in the area of Hwy. 44 and I-5.

Already alerted to the man’s attempt to elude Redding officers, California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene of the wreck moments later, along with Redding police officers.

The other driver involved in the collision, who Harris said was not at fault in the collision, suffered minor to moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital, according to the Corporal.

While CHP investigated the cause of the crash, Redding PD’s DUI Investigator Jacob Provencio arrived at the scene and administered a series of field sobriety tests, during which he determined Pulido was possibly under the influence of alcohol and marijuana.

Pulido was subsequently arrested and transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries he received in the collision. He was later booked into Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of felony evading and felony DUI causing injury. Jail records indicate he remains in custody on $50,000 bail.
