Redding police officers responded to Kutras Gardens Senior Apartments at 540 South St., after receiving a 911 call reporting a suspicious male in the parking lot of the complex, Redding Police Officer J. Kasinger explained after Monday morning’s incident and arrest.

The 911 caller told SHASCOM that the male appeared to be carrying a rifle, before reporting hearing a motorcycle start up and leave the complex. A few minutes later SHASCOM received a second call from a victim who reported his Harley Davidson motorcycle had just been stolen from the apartment complex.

Responding officers quickly spotted the stolen motorcycle a short distance away, as it was traveling south on Park Marina Ave., according to Kasinger.

25-year-old, Oroville resident, Cory Ray Arguello, was arrested after leading Redding police officers on a pursuit while riding a motorcycle he had just stolen from a Redding apartment complex.

“Officers attempted to stop the motorcycle but the suspect refused to stop and led officers on a short vehicle pursuit,” said Kasinger. Arguello eventually abandoned the motorcycle and fled on foot, about two and a half miles away, in the 2700 block of Wyndham Ln.

Officers quickly set up a perimeter and began an extensive search of the area for the motorcycle thief. As their search continued, officers requested additional resources and assistance, and a CHP helicopter and Redding PD’s K-9 “Njord” soon arrived in the area to help with the ongoing search.

As their search was continuing, a Windham Ln. resident called 911 and reported hearing a subject run through her back yard. With the new information, CHP’s aviation crew soon directed officers to a person who was possibly hiding in a nearby back yard.

As the CHP copter circled overhead, providing vital information and updates to officers on the ground, K-9 Njord alerted on a trash can in the back yard of the house. Faced with the prospect of taking on and being bitten by the police service dog, Arguello surrendered to officers without further incident.

“Arguello was arrested for stealing the motorcycle and evading officers,” Kasinger explained. “Arguello also had warrants for his arrest for vehicle theft and possession of stolen property. He was booked at the Shasta County Jail.”

Anyone with further information about this investigation or Arguello’s alleged criminal activities is encouraged to contact Redding PD at (530) 225-4200. Callers can refer to incident file number 19R018800 and can remain anonymous.
