Two juveniles among three killed, after four shot in separate Moreno Valley shootings

MORENO VALLEY — Authorities say four people, including at least three juveniles, were shot in two separate shootings that rocked Moreno Valley in less than 24 hours, Saturday, Aug. 31. The two shootings happened just over two miles apart, according to sheriff’s officials, who have not said if the shootings were related. Three of the victims, including at least two juveniles, died as a result of the separate incidents.

The first deadly shooting happened at a gas station at the intersection at Sunnymead and Perris boulevards, while the second fatal shooting happened about two and a half miles away at an apartment complex at 12080 Pigeon Pass Rd.

The first homicide investigation began around 1:15 a.m., when deputies from the Moreno Valley Sheriff Station were investigating a battery call and heard shots fired east of their location, Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Ben Ramirez reported after the two shootings.

Deputies responded to an Arco gas station at the southwest corner of the intersection at Sunnymead Blvd. and Perris Blvd., where they located two male juveniles suffering from gunshot wounds, according to the Sgt.

Despite life-saving efforts, one of the juveniles was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other juvenile victim was rushed to a local hospital where he also succumbed to his injuries.

Deputies secured the crime scene and Central Homicide Unit and Moreno Valley investigators responded and assumed the investigation.

Although both victims have been identified, neither of the boy’s names have been released due to their age, according to Ramirez.

At around 11:30 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a report of shots fired at Highland Meadows Apartment Homes at 12080 Pigeon Pass Rd.

When deputies arrived they located two male victims with gunshot wounds, according to Ramirez, who did not specify the victim’s ages. A third victim was uninjured in the shooting.

Both victims were transported to a local hospital, where one of the pair succumbed to his injuries.

“The deceased victim’s identity will not be released at this time,” the Sgt. explained; saying, “The surviving victim was a minor whose identity will not be released.”

“I am deeply concerned with the persistent and deadly violence that has plagued our city since I’ve taken office,” Moreno Valley City Council member Carla Thornton said on social media after the two deadly incidents.

“These recent shootings, which have resulted in 3 murders in the past 24 hours are scary, frustrating for those of us who remember feeling safe in our city and incredibly sad for the families who are impacted by these losses,” Thornton continued; saying, “I have complete faith in Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station and the detectives to find all of the criminals who have committed these violent acts.”

Both shootings remain under investigation and officials have not released any further details at this time.
