Shasta County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene at 12:31 a.m., after the alleged suspect, later identified as 20-year-old, Buck Carlile, called 911 to report the shooting, Shasta County Sheriff’s Sgt. Fernandez reported this morning.

Official radio traffic at the time indicated Carlile and his father were still on the property parked in a white Ford Ranger. While waiting for deputies to arrive, Carlile remained on the phone with SHASCOM dispatchers he advised he was in possession of two firearms, an unspecified .22 caliber weapon and a shotgun. Officials did not specify which of the two weapons he shot the victim in the face with.

As deputies were responding to the area they requested emergency dispatchers to advise Carlile and his father when they arrived, the pair were to exit their vehicle while unarmed with their hands in the air. Radio traffic indicated the alleged suspect remained cooperative throughout the time he was speaking with the 911 dispatchers.

When deputies arrived at the scene they quickly located and detained Carlile and his father without incident.

After detaining the pair, deputies located the victim, Nicholas Derossett, 39, “who sustained a single gunshot wound to the face,” according to Fernandez.

Based on the severity of his injuries, a REACH helicopter was summoned to transport Derossett to Mercy Hospital, where he is currently listed in critical condition.

During their subsequent investigation, officials learned Carlile and Derossett live on the same property and have been involved an ongoing eviction dispute, Fernandez reported.

“Carlile went to Derosett’s residence to confront Derossett about being evicted,” Fernandez explained. “During the dispute Carlile brandished a firearm and shot Derossett.”

Based on their investigation officials arrested Carlile for assault with a deadly weapon/firearm. He was later transported to the Shasta County jail where he was booked.

The Sheriff’s investigation is ongoing and Carlile could end up facing additional charges related to the violent encounter.
