Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene of the crash at 9:52 p.m., after receiving reports of a motorcyclist that had crashed and was seriously injured. According to a CHP incident log, 911 callers reported the downed rider was unconscious but still breathing.

When officials arrived they found a wrecked motorcycle wedged underneath and between the guard rails along the southern, eastbound side of the two-lane mountain roadway. A 20-foot section of guardrail was damaged and pushed outward from the motorcycle’s impact.

Other motorists had stopped at the scene and were helping to direct traffic around the downed rider and wrecked motorcycle; parts of which were scattered across the roadway.

Based on the rider’s initially reported injuries an air ambulance was launched to the scene but it was not immediately known how or where the victim was transported for treatment of injuries that CHP’s log listed as major.

Although the crash caused the temporary closure of the eastbound side of the highway, westbound traffic was unimpeded.

The wrecked motorcycle, which appeared to be a Harley-Davidson style cruiser, was eventually un-wedged from between the guard rails and towed from the scene. CalTrans crews were notified so they could repair the damaged section of guard rail.

CHP is investigating the cause of the crash and their investigation is active and ongoing.

This is a developing story that will be updated as new information is available.
