Alleged car thief’s discarded clothing leads RPD K-9 straight to suspect

REDDING — Already on probation for vehicle theft, a Redding man was arrested once again after being caught in a stolen vehicle Friday evening, Oct. 18.

Although the probationer fled from officers, leading to a large-scale manhunt in and around the Starlite Mobile Estates at 1221 Cypress Ave., the felon was eventually apprehended after a police K-9 tracked the man down using items of clothing he had discarded as he fled.

Last night’s incident began shortly before 10 p.m., when a Redding police officer spotted a car he recognized as a possible stolen vehicle, Redding Police Corporal Rob Garnero later reported. As the officer watched, the vehicle entered a parking lot and parked outside the Golden One Credit Union at 1040 E. Cypress Ave.

While the officer conducted a records check of the vehicle, described as a maroon-colored Ford SUV, he observed a man exit the SUV and use the bank’s ATM.

The records check quickly confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen.

As the man, later identified as Troy Farrare, 30, of Redding, walked back toward the stolen SUV he spotted the officer approaching and immediately fled the area on foot, running southbound through the parking lot and into an empty field, according to Garnero. 

Despite chasing Farrare through the parking lot and adjacent field, the officer soon lost sight of the fleeing man, who discarded several articles of clothing as he was running.

Numerous Redding PD officers, along with K-9 “Dozer” and a CHP helicopter, converged on the area; quickly establishing a perimeter surrounding the area where Farrare was last seen running.

Using a hat and sweatshirt the suspect discarded while fleeing from the officer, K-9 Dozer quickly picked up the man’s scent and began tracking him.

The scent track led to the Starlite Mobile Estates where officers conducted an “extensive search” of the large location, which features nearly 190 homes.

With assistance from Starlite Estate residents, officers followed K-9 Dozer’s nose to a porch outside one of the homes, where Farrare was found hiding.

He was subsequently taken into custody without further incident, according to Garnero.

After his arrest, officers booked Farrare into Shasta County Jail on Suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, obstructing and resisting officers and violation of probation.
