Original Story: Swept away by Sacramento River, search for Anderson man continuing

ANDERSON, Calif. — Officials from multiple agencies today are continuing their search for an Anderson man who reportedly became fatigued and was swept away while trying to swim in the swift-moving current of the Sacramento River Sunday afternoon, May 3.

According to witnesses, the victim was not wearing a life jacket and was only wearing a pair of red shorts when he entered the water and was last seen.

Despite an hours-long search yesterday, which took place near Hawes Hole and the Anderson River Park, the victim was not located and was believed to have possibly drowned, according to officials coordinating the search efforts.

Anderson police officers were first alerted to the emergency just after 2 p.m., after SHASCOM emergency dispatchers received a report of a possible drowning and water rescue, Shasta County Sheriff’s Sgt. Rob Sandbloom has since said of the ongoing search efforts.

Based on the reported circumstances, Cal Fire, Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Unit and Dive Team, and California Highway Patrol’s Air Operations responded to assist APD officers.

When officials arrived they learned a 31-year-old Anderson man was last seen after entering the Sacramento River from Anderson River Park.

The victim had tried to swim to the opposite shoreline of the river to help his friend after a Jet Ski the victim’s acquaintance was riding began suffering mechanical issues, according to Sandbloom; who said officials immediately began searching for the missing man.

As the man was attempting to swim across the “fast moving and very cold” river he began to struggle and show signs of fatigue about halfway to the opposite shore, the Sgt. described.

As the victim started to go under the water’s surface he began calling for help, according to Sandbloom; who said the victim “went up and down a few more times before he was not seen resurfacing.”

“A drift boat in the area tried to get to the man, but was unable to before he went under water and disappeared,” Sandbloom continued.

Although officials spent several hours searching for the missing man, the search was called off as darkness fell, with search operations scheduled to resume this morning.

This is a developing story that will be updated as new information is available.
