Assemblywoman Dahle responds to letter calling for statewide suspension of all gun and ammo sales

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Responding to a letter recently sent to California Governor Gavin Newsom amidst the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis – calling for a statewide suspension of firearm and ammunition sales – California Assemblywoman Megan Dahle (R-Bieber) issued a statement today voicing her strong opposition to the request.

Saying she will continue to defend citizens’ rights, Dahle today said she is “deeply concerned” regarding the request, and that she will continue to oppose any attempt to limit Californian’s Second Amendment rights and other constitutional freedoms.

In a letter sent to SCNS and other area news agencies, Dahle said she issued the statement after learning of the letter’s contents and what she referred to as an “unconstitutional request”.

“As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose new challenges to our state, it has come to my attention that a concerning letter has been sent to Governor Newsom from one of my colleagues in the State Assembly,” Dahle wrote in her statement.

The letter requested that Newsom enact a statewide suspension of firearm and ammunition sales, according to Dahle.

“Currently, this letter is not attached to any legislation and the Governor has not taken any action to move forward with this unconstitutional request,” Dahle explained, saying, “But I, along with many residents of the North State who have contacted me to express their opposition, am deeply concerned about this request.

“Not only would this action be a complete violation of our Second Amendment rights as Americans, but a gross overstep of government in violation of our private property rights,” continued Dahle.

The letter, which was sent to Newsom last month by Assemblyman Miguel Santiago (D-East Los Angeles) implored the Governor to halt the sale of all firearms and ammunition to stop what he referred to as “panic-buying” in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The request, which followed a surge in the sales of guns and ammo in the days and weeks after COVID-19 became a world-wide crisis, included a provision to allow law enforcement and authorized peace officers to purchase needed firearms and ammunition, but made no mention of when the suspension could be lifted.

In his letter, Santiago compared the rush to purchase weapons and ammunition to the unprecedented rush on everyday necessities such as food, water, and toilet paper; as well as cleaning supplies and disinfectants, and personal protective gear such as masks.

“While personal safety is extremely important during these challenging times, so is public safety,” Santiago wrote in his letter; saying, “An increased population of firearms in our state not only poses a greater risk to children and families who are largely confined to their homes, but also to our communities facing racially motivated or otherwise targeted hate.”

Dahle explained she has and will continue to oppose “any attempt to limit our Second Amendment rights as Californians and will do all in my power to prevent this request from moving forward.”

Saying she is honored to serve in the California Legislature and will continue to defend Californian’s rights, Dahle later thanked area residents for their ongoing vigilance and asked all California residents to continue “keeping their representatives in Sacramento accountable.”

Contacted for more information about the letter and its request, a representative said Newsom was not immediately available for comment.

Assemblywoman Megan Dahle represents the 1st Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes portions of Butte and Placer counties, along with Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, and Siskiyou counties.

    Newsom needs to go.

  • Amen, along with all other traitors, how long are we supposed to tolerate this bullshit. Seems to me they have only time to remove your rights and freedoms, nothing positive, or they have time to remove polical power from white Christian’s and give it to people whom hates white polical power and Gods Christian laws to build up the law breakers who have no moral whatsoever, then change ( you always here change. Change to what a democracy(mob rule) instead of a republic). All this in the name o equality. Go back to common laws Gods laws, but that will never happen because other races don’t understand nor want to obey these laws and then you have the agitators Jews and the Tare’s who have mixed their seed with the agitators and have become manzers, race mixers who will never ever understand the plan of God to destroy the wicked.
