California Highway Patrol, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Cal Fire-Riverside, and AMR were dispatched to the scene around 1:53 a.m.,  after receiving a 911 call reporting the accident, according to official radio traffic at the time.

Based on the extent of the man’s reported injuries, while firefighters were still responding to the scene they requested a Mercy Air Ambulance be prepared to launch to the area to airlift the victim if needed.

However, once officials arrived they found the man still down in the roadway and determined the victim had already succumbed to his injuries and passed away. He was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel and the air ambulance was cancelled.

The victim’s name has not been released, pending further investigation and notification of the man’s family.

While investigating the fatal collision, CHP learned the pedestrian killed in the crash, reportedly a local to the area, had been walking his bike across a darkened and poorly lit section of SR-74/Florida Ave. just east of Lincoln Ave., when he was struck by a small hatchback traveling eastbound on Florida Ave.

After the collision, the traumatized driver who hit the man immediately pulled over and attempted to render aid to the victim; without success. The driver then remained at the scene and was cooperating with CHP’s investigation.

The driver reportedly told officers and others at the scene that due to the darkness along the road they did not see the man walking his bike across the road until it was too late to react or stop in time to avoid hitting the victim.

The impact threw the pedestrian some distance from the scene of the crash and destroyed his bicycle, breaking it into several pieces. Parts of the bicycle were later found in a group of bushes along the south side of the roadway.

While CHP and other emergency personnel worked at the scene, officials called for the temporary closure of both lanes of traffic along Florida Ave.; but the westbound lanes were eventually reopened to allow for both east and west bound traffic to continue past the scene of the accident.

The eastbound lanes were reopened at the conclusion of CHP’s initial on-scene investigation.

It was not believed that alcohol and/or drug intoxication were contributing factors in the deadly accident but CHP’s investigation is ongoing.

This is a developing story that will be updated as new information is available.
