One dead, one in custody, after deadly Menifee shooting

MENIFEE, Calif. — Authorities say one man is dead and another man is in custody after a fatal shooting at a private residence in the Sun City community of Menifee early Saturday morning, July 4.

The deadly incident, which led to a brief standoff and SWAT call out, happened on the 26200 block of Bluebell St., southeast of Menifee and Rouse roads.

Officers from the newly formed Menifee Police Department, which began serving the city of Menifee three days earlier on July 1, were dispatched to the home at 2:15 a.m., after receiving reports of a shooting at the residence.

The 911 caller told emergency dispatchers that her boyfriend had just shot her friend inside the house, and that he was still armed with a firearm, Menifee PD later said of the deadly shooting and arrest.

Officers arrested 46-year-old Jeremy Casados after he allegedly fatally shot a 37-year-old Menifee man early Saturday morning. Menifee PD photo.

Officers began arriving at the home within minutes of the dispatched call and found the 911 caller outside the house.

The woman told responding officers that the suspect, who has since been identified as 46-year-old, Jeremy Phillip Casados, was still inside the residence with the shooting victim and a small child, according to officials.

Officers immediately formed a perimeter around the residence and began attempting to communicate with Casados, who at one point was seen still holding a firearm.

However, despite the officers commands, Casados initially refused to exit the home.

Based on the circumstances, officers at the scene requested assistance and additional resources from the joint Murrieta/Hemet PD SWAT team, as well as a K-9 from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, according to Menifee Police Cpt. David Gutierrez.

As SWAT members and K-9 teams were arriving at the scene, Casados
exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.

After Casados was safely detained, officers quickly entered the home, where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body.

With help from Cal Fire-Riverside paramedics, officials began lifesaving efforts on the shooting victim. However, despite their efforts to revive the victim, the man succumbed to his gunshot injury and passed away at the scene.

The small child and the woman who reported the shooting were not injured during the deadly incident.

Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner officials have since identified the victim as 37-year-old, Menifee resident, Kerry Ogarro. A coroner’s release indicated Ogarro was pronounced deceased at 3:19 a.m.

During their preliminary investigation, officers determined that all of the involved parties knew each other.

“This was an isolated incident … and … there are no outstanding suspects and no danger to the community,” according to officials; who did not specify if there was a known motive for the shooting or what may have led to the deadly encounter.

Based on their investigation, officers arrested Casados and he was later booked into Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta on suspicion of murder. He was also booked on a DUI warrant and failure to appear in court or pay a fine.

“This was a rapidly evolving and dangerous scene for all involved, including our officers,” Menifee Police Chief Pat Walsh later said. “As a result of great police work, our officers were able to safely take the suspect into custody.

“I want to thank the Murrieta Police Department/Hemet Police Department SWAT team and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department K9 Unit for their assistance with this call,” Walsh continued.

Online jail records indicate Casados remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail or bond and he is scheduled to be arraigned at Murrieta’s Southwest Justice Center July 8.
