Dangerous Anderson DUI pursuit ends with crash

ANDERSON, Calif. — A dangerous Anderson pursuit, which was called off for safety reasons due to the reckless driving actions of the alleged drunk driver, ended when the fleeing vehicle crashed early Sunday morning, July 5.

A Red Bluff man, since identified as 19-year-old, Alberto Gabriel Alcala, was later determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently arrested.

City of Anderson police officers were conducting extra enforcement related to Fourth of July activities around 12:35 a.m., when they spotted a vehicle traveling onto Highway 273 from South St.

Officers then observed the vehicle, which was occupied by three people, driving into the opposing lane of traffic while exhibiting signs of driving under the influence as the vehicle continued traveling southbound on Highway 273.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic enforcement stop of the vehicle; however, Alcala refused to yield and sped away from officials.

As the vehicle continued southbound onto Interstate 5 officers initiated a vehicle pursuit.

Despite the officers’ lights and sirens, “(Alcala) continued fleeing at high rates of speed and nearly collided with several vehicles on the interstate,” Anderson PD officials have since said of the pursuit and crash.

As the chase continued, Alcala fled from officers in an extremely reckless manner, without regard for their safety or the safety of other motorists or his own passengers.

“Fearing for the safety of the passengers inside of the vehicle and the motoring public, Officers discontinued the pursuit,” Anderson PD explained.

After terminating the pursuit, as officers were exiting I-5 at Bowman Rd., they witnessed Alcala’s vehicle lose control and careen off of the highway.

Officers soon located Alcala’s vehicle in the area of Bowman and Amen roads and found the driver and his two passengers outside the wrecked car.

Medical personnel were requested to the scene and examined each of the occupants, one of whom was later determined to be a juvenile.

“All the occupants, including the driver, of the vehicle, were determined to be under the influence of alcohol,” said APD.

During their subsequent investigation, “Alacala admitted to being the driver of the vehicle and acknowledged the dangers he posed to the occupants of the vehicle as well as the motoring public,” APD continued.

Based on their investigation, Alcala was arrested and later booked into Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of felony pursuit, child endangerment, and driving under the influence.

Online jail records indicate Alcala remains in custody in lieu of $50,000 bail or bond.
