Sheriff’s K-9 assists with man’s arrest after knife attack

WHITMORE, Calif. — A man with a felony warrant was arrested after allegedly stabbing another man and vandalizing his vehicle at a trailer park in the unincorporated community of Whitmore Saturday afternoon, Aug. 22.

Although the victim was not seriously injured in the stabbing, which happened at at the Whitmore Trailer Park on the 29000 block of Whitmore Rd, between Big Spring and S. Cow Creek roads, the suspect refused to be taken into custody, leading to the use of a sheriff’s K-9 to assist with his apprehension.

Deputies were dispatched to the area at 5:42 p.m., after receiving the report of a stabbing, Shasta County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ken Koenen has since said of the incident and arrest.

While responding to the area, deputies were informed that Edward Carlton Sligar Jr., 59, a tenant of the trailer park, stabbed another tenant, William McGrew, 60, in the arm.

Deputies also learned Sligar had a felony bench warrant for his arrest, according to Koenen; who did nnot specify what the warrant was for.

When deputies arrived at the trailer park, Sligar fled into his residence and initially refused deputies’ commands to exit the residence.

“After a few minutes, Sligar returned outside but refused to follow lawful orders by deputies who were attempting to detain him for their safety and investigation of the incident,” explained Koenen.

Because deputies did not know if Sliger was still armed with the knife he reportedly stabbed the victim with or if it or other weapons were within his reach inside his trailer, Koenen said deputies used extreme caution and enlisted help from Sheriff’s K-9 “Fritz”.

“After numerous commands were given, it was apparent Sligar would not comply and began reaching in the area of his waistband,” Koenen described; saying, “K-9 Fritz was deployed and took Sligar into custody.”

After Sligar’s apprehension deputies contacted McGrew and determined he had sustained non-life-threatening lacerations to his arm. Deputies also learned Sligar had vandalized McGrew’s vehicle during the violent encounter.

McGrew was evaluated by paramedics, but declined further medical treatment at the scene, according to Koenen.
