Three arrested after Lake Elsinore axe and bat attack

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. — Authorities in Lake Elsinore say a “rigorous investigation” into a brutal axe and baseball attack of a local transient last August has resulted in the arrest of three other transients, all of whom were arrested and charged on Friday, Sept. 11.

The victim of the bloody attack, which took place early Tuesday morning, Aug. 18, on the 200 Block of Graham Ave., has remained hospitalized since the date of the incident and is continuing to receive medical treatment for his serious injuries.

Deputies from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call about 4:55 a.m., Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Glenn Warrington reported after Friday’s arrests.

Responding deputies found a local transient who had been struck several times with an ax and baseball bat and the victim was rushed to an area hospital where he has remained since the violent encounter.

“At the time of the incident, the Sheriff’s Department did not have any investigative leads,” explained Wallace.

Members of the Lake Elsinore Station’s Problem Oriented Policing Team assumed the investigation, canvassing the area and conducting many follow up interviews to gain further investigative leads, according Wallace.

During their subsequent investigation, officials developed leads and gathered information that led them to identifying three suspects in the violent attack, since identified as Robert Estrada, Destiny Elliott, and Andrew Avila. All are transients within the city of Lake Elsinore.

Based on their investigation, POP Team officials located and arrested Estrada and Elliott on Friday, Sept. 11.

The pair was booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta on a variety of felony charges; including assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit attempted murder and mayhem.

Avila was found to already be in custody at CBDC on an unrelated crime. In addition to his originally booked crimes, he now faces the additional charges of conspiracy to commit attempted murder and mayhem.
