Redding shooting leads to attempted murder charge

REDDING, Calif. — A woman was shot and a man was arrested after a violent incident at a rural home about a half-mile outside Redding city limits on Monday morning, Sept. 14. The pair had previously been involved in a dating relationship and living together, according to officials who investigated the shooting.

Although the man later told officers he was in fear for his safety when he shot the woman as she stood outside his residence, officials learned the woman was unarmed when she was shot. Officials also found evidence in the form of text messages that indicated the suspect had warned the victim he would shoot her if she returned to the home they once shared.

Deputies were alerted to the shooting about 7:40 a.m., after SHASCOM emergency dispatchers received multiple calls reporting a loud verbal argument and shots fired on the 9000 block of Placer Rd. in an unincorporated area of Redding, Shasta County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jose Gonzalez has since said of the shooting and arrest.

While 911 callers reported the shooting victim was being transported to a local hospital, dispatchers also received a call from a man who reported that he had just shot someone on his property.

That caller was later identified as 43-year-old, Redding resident, Joshua Eric Carlson.

While deputies interviewed the victim – who suffered a single gunshot wound and has not been publicly identified – at an area hospital, other deputies responded to the scene of the shooting where they found Carlson waiting outside his home.

Carlson was no longer armed and cooperative with deputies, according to Gonzalez. Deputies detained him without incident before transporting him to the Sheriff’s Office, where he was interviewed by members of the department’s Major Crimes Unit.

“The subsequent investigation revealed that Carlson and the gunshot victim had been in a dating
relationship and living together until recently,” Gonzalez has since reported.

“Based on the evidence and Carlson’s statement, he was standing inside his residence when he fired a handgun once through a window striking the victim in the upper torso while she was on the back porch,” the Sgt. continued.

Although Carlson told investigating officials that he was in fear for his safety, the sheriff’s investigation revealed the victim “was not armed and was in no position to cause immediate harm to Carlson,” according to Gonzalez; who added, “Deputies also discovered text messages between Carlson and the victim where he threatened to shoot the victim if she returned to the residence.”

Based on their investigation and evidence related to the shooting, officials arrested Carlson and he was later booked into Shasta County jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder.

Online jail records indicate Carlson remains in custody in lieu of $500,000 bail or bond.

Anyone with further information regarding this investigation is encouraged to contact Shasta County Sheriff’s Department at (530) 225-3700. Callers can refer to incident file number 20S028921 and can remain anonymous.
