Moreno Valley DUI pursuit ends with one dead

MORENO VALLEY, Calif. — Authorities say a suspected drunk driver died after fleeing from deputies and crashing into another vehicle in Moreno Valley yesterday morning, Wednesday, Sept. 16. Two occupants from the vehicle the fleeing man crashed into were hospitalized after the deadly collision.

The short pursuit, which covered less than four miles and ended in a fatal rollover, began in the area of Heacock St. and Dracaea Ave. and ended at the intersection of Indian and Krameria avenues.

Yesterday’s deadly pursuit began about 9:15 a.m., when a motorcycle enforcement deputy from the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station “attempted to stop the driver of a black Jeep for driving while intoxicated,” Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Bryan De Loss has since said of the fatal accident.

The deputy had been conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Heacock St. and Dracaea Ave. when he spotted the suspected drunk driver, according to De Loss.

Although the deputy activated his emergency lights and siren, the driver of the Jeep failed to stop and a vehicle pursuit was initiated.

“The pursuit traveled on surface streets to the intersection of Indian Ave. and Krameria Ave. where the suspect failed to stop for a stop sign and collided with a Hyundai Santa Fe traveling west on Krameria Avenue,” De Loss described; adding, “This collision caused major damage to both vehicles.”

The impact with the Hyundai caused the Jeep to overturn, according to the Sgt., who said, “The suspect driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.”

“The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin,” added De Loss.

The driver and passenger of the Hyundai involved in the collision sustained injuries as a result of the collision and were immediately provided first aid. They were then transported by ambulance to an area hospital where they were treated. They have since been released, according to De Loss.

Members of California Highway Patrol’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded and assumed the investigation into the fatal collision.

The area of Indian and Krameria avenues was closed and traffic was diverted onto area roadways until the investigation concluded around 5 p.m.

CHP’s investigation is ongoing.
