Major injuries after SR-299E rollover, ejection

MONTGOMERY CREEK, Calif. — Authorities say a driver sustained major injuries and was airlifted to an area trauma center after being ejected during a solo-vehicle rollover accident in Shasta County yesterday morning, Friday, Sept. 18.

The crash, which ignited a small brush and vegetation fire, happened near the Hillcrest rest area on SR-299E, between the Intermountain communities of Burney and Montgomery Creek, according to CHP.

Yesterday’s crash was at least the fourth, solo-vehicle rollover accident in the Intermountain area in as many weeks and the second rollover accident to happen Friday morning.

The other rollover crash on Friday morning happened around 1:12 a.m., on Mountain View Rd., about a mile east of Carberry St. and just west of the water tower, in Burney. Two women were injured in that accident, including one who was transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The other two single-vehicle rollover accidents ended in fatalities; including a Wednesday, Sept. 16 crash that killed a woman on SR-299E near Woodman Lane, between the unincorporated communities of Bella Vista and Oak Run; and another fatal accident that killed a 77-year-old Palo Cedro man on SR-299E, between Oak Run and Buzzard Roost roads east of Bella Vista on Aug. 29.

CHP and other emergency personnel were alerted to the most recent crash at 11:08 a.m., after receiving reports of a solo-vehicle rollover with possible ejection. 911 callers reported the crash ignited a small vegetation fire, a CHP representative told SCNS this morning.

Montgomery Creek Volunteer Fire Company 71 firefighters were first to arrive at the scene and confirmed finding a heavily-damaged and still burning Chevy Malibu overturned and on its roof along the side of the winding, two-lane mountain roadway.

Firefighters immediately began providing advanced life support to the victim involved in the crash and made quick work knocking down the vehicle and vegetation fire, according to witnesses.

The driver and sole occupant of the Chevy, which was left unrecognizable after the accident, suffered major injuries and CHP’s H-14 landed in the area to airlift the critically injured victim to Mercy Hospital in Redding, according to CHP.

The victim’s name has not yet been released and their current condition was not known as of this report.

While officials worked at the scene, CHP implemented one-way traffic control to allow for commuters and area motorists to slowly work their way past the scene of the accident. Area residents later reported short delays in their travel times.

The highway was re-opened to regular traffic just after 1:30 p.m., when CHP completed their initial on-scene investigation, said CHP.

No further details have been released and CHP’s investigation is ongoing.
