Deputies and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the area around 12:30 a.m., after Union Pacific Railroad dispatchers notified SHASCOM regarding a possible train vs pedestrian accident, Shasta County Sheriff’s Office – Enforcement Division Sergeant Ken Koenen later said of the fatal incident.

After arriving at the scene, deputies, along with EMS and railroad personnel searched the area along the railroad tracks and eventually located the victim, since identified as 57-year-old Michael Flint.

Flint had sustained “massive head injuries”, according to Koenen; who said the victim was transported via ground ambulance to Mercy Hospital as a trauma alert.

“Despite life saving measures, Flint succumbed to his injuries in the early morning hours of Sunday, Dec. 13.”

Koenen used the opportunity to remind the public about the dangers of walking on or near railroad tracks.

“Railroad tracks are not intended to be utilized as walking areas,” Koenen explained. “Trains approach quickly, can appear to be travelling slower than they actually are, and can take a mile or more to stop safely.”
