Driver critically injured in Moreno Valley – DUI suspected

MORENO VALLEY, Calif. — Authorities say a suspected drunk driver suffered major injuries after losing control of their vehicle and smashing into a concrete structure in a field early this morning, Sunday, Dec. 20.

The crash happened on Gilman Springs Road, south of Alessandro Boulevard, in the city of Moreno Valley, according to officials; who said the victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Deputies from the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station, along with Cal Fire-Riverside and AMR, were dispatched to the scene about 2:40 a.m., after receiving the report of a major injury traffic collision, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant R. Grmusha later said of the crash.

When officials arrived they located a silver Toyota Avalon in a field. The vehicle was heavily damaged and officials found the driver and sole-occupant still inside the sedan.

“The driver suffered major injuries and was transported to a local area hospital where he was listed to be in critical condition,” said Grmusha.

Members of the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation.

During their preliminary investigation deputies determined the driver of the Toyota “was traveling southbound on Gilman Springs Road at a high rate of speed, south of Alessandro Boulevard,” Grmusha described.

“While trying to negotiate a curve, the Toyota Avalon’s driver lost control and the vehicle left the roadway, subsequently colliding with a concrete structure in a nearby field,” said Grmusha; who added, “Alcohol and or drugs were considered to be a suspected factor in the collision.”
