Parolee arrested after three Riverside robberies in one night

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Authorities say a homeless man on parole for assault with a deadly weapon was arrested while in the commission of committing his third robbery of the night in Riverside Saturday evening, Dec. 19.

“Unfortunately, the third time is ‘not a charm’ for the parolee we arrested last night,” Riverside Police Department said after the three robberies, which happened at the Tobacco Island Plus smoke shop, Dairy Queen and Walgreens. All three businesses are located near the intersection of Magnolia and Central avenues and are all within short walking distance of each other.

City of Riverside patrol officers responded to the Tobacco Island Plus smoke shop in the 6600 block of Magnolia Avenue around 7:30 p.m., after receiving a 911 call reporting a robbery in progress, Riverside PD later said of the incidents and arrest.

Once they arrived, officers learned the same suspect had just committed two other robberies at the nearby Dairy Queen and Walgreens and officers quickly located the suspect still inside the smoke shop. He was safely detained while he was still inside the business, said officials.

Riverside PD officers arrested parolee John Brogdon while he was in the commission of robing a Riverside smoke shop last night. It was the third robbery he had committed the same evening, say officials.

Investigating officers learned John Kevin Brogdon, a 55-year-old transient out of Jurupa Valley, had gone into each of the three businesses where he passed a note to employees stating he was committing a robbery and demanded money.

“While at the smoke shop, he alluded that he had a gun and also demanded an 18-inch sword hanging behind the counter in a display case,” said RPD.

Based on their investigation, officers arrested Brogdon and he was later booked into Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of three counts of second-degree robbery as well as violating his parole.

Online jail records indicate Brogdon remains in custody where he is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned at the Riverside Hall Of Justice Dec. 23.

“This parolee put a fear in these victims that will affect them for some time,” said RPD; adding, “We are thankful for the bravery they all demonstrated to keep themselves and their customers safe during this ordeal.”
