DUI driver arrested after mowing down Highgrove gas station sign, pump

HIGHGROVE, Calif. — A man who lost control of his vehicle and knocked down a gas station sign before plowing into a pump, knocking the pump from its foundation and causing a fuel spill, was later arrested after he was determined to have been driving while intoxicated late last night, Sunday, Jan. 17.

The minor injury, solo-vehicle traffic accident happened at the 76 gas station at 290 Iowa Avenue in Highgrove.

California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire-Riverside responded to the scene around 10:45 p.m., after receiving reports of a vehicle that crashed into a 76 gas station sign and pump at the location.

When officials arrived they found a grey Honda that had smashed into a gas pump, which had been knocked over and was laying on its side. The gas station’s main sign had also been destroyed in the crash.

“Fortunately, an employee of the gas station was quick to hit the emergency shut off, which stopped an excess of fuel from flowing from the damaged pump,” a firefighter reported from the scene.

While CHP investigated the cause of the accident, Cal Fire covered the spilled gas with dirt and sand and verified the flow of gasoline had stopped.

The pump area was closed until needed repairs were made, while fire crews cleaned up the fuel spill and work was begun to remove the destroyed pump.

It was not immediately known if the entire gas station would need to be temporarily closed to facilitate the necessary repairs.

During their subsequent investigation, CHP determined the driver, 27-year-old, Oscar Cisneros, was under the influence of alcohol and had been speeding when he attempted to make a turn at the intersection. However, due to his excessive speed, Cisneros hit the curb and careened into the pump area.

Cisneros was transported to Riverside Community Hospital where he was treated for minor facial and other injuries before he was booked into Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of DUI.

Online jail records indicate he was released within hours of his arrest and he is scheduled to be arraigned at the Riverside Hall of Justice May 11.

No other injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
