LAKE MATHEWS, Calif. — Authorities say a property owner shot and killed a former resident during a violent altercation in the unincorporated community of Lake Mathews, south of Riverside and northwest of Perris, Thursday evening, Jan. 21.

Sheriff’s officials are calling the shooting, which happened in the 21000 block of Harford Park Lane, self-defense and no arrests have been made.

Deputies from the Perris Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to the property shortly after 9 p.m., after receiving the report of subjects involved in an altercation, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Richard Carroll later said of the deadly incident.

During the confrontation, the property owner was physically threatened by a former resident, since identified as 39-year-old, Ned Cornish, from Perris, according to Carroll.

As the confrontation escalated, the property owner “feared for their safety and their family’s safety and used a firearm against the assailant,” Carroll described.

When deputies arrived at the location they found Cornish suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts, Cornish succumbed to his injury and passed away at the scene.
