UPDATE: Victim, 18, ID’d after crashing into Riverside light pole

UPDATED: Friday, Jan. 29, 2:16 p.m., With release of coroner’s information, other details.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Authorities say an 18-year-old Riverside resident was killed after he lost control of his vehicle and smashed head-on into a concrete light pole early Saturday morning, Jan. 23. The fatal wreck happened in the 3940 block of Van Buren Boulevard near Mason Street, according to Riverside PD and coroner officials.

The deadly accident was the first of two fatal crashes to happen the same day in Riverside. The second collision happened later Saturday evening when an 18-year-old Costa Mesa man lost control of his pickup truck while exiting the 91 Freeway at Arlington Avenue and crashed head-on into a tree. The driver died at the scene, while two female passengers sustained moderate to major injuries.

City of Riverside Police and Fire personnel were dispatched to the scene around 12:30 a.m., after the City’s Public Safety Communication Center received several reports of a single-vehicle traffic collision, Riverside PD has since said of the fatal accident.

When officials arrived they found a silver 2004 Nissan 350Z that had plowed into a concrete street light pole.

The driver sustained critical injuries and he succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the scene. Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner officials have since identified the victim as Steven Garibay, 18, of Riverside. A coroner’s release indicated he was pronounced deceased by medical staff at 12:32 a.m.

During their preliminary investigation officers determined Garibay was traveling southbound on Van Buren Blvd. approaching Mason Street when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of his vehicle.

“The Nissan crossed over the southbound lanes and struck a concrete street light pole on the southwest corner of Van Buren Blvd. and Mason Street,” Riverside PD reported.

Drug and/or alcohol intoxication are not believed to have been contributing factors in the fatal crash.

He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 30 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 18 grandchildren.
