Redding PD UAV and K-9 instrumental in apprehending wanted felon

REDDING, Calif. — A wanted felon who is well known to officers due to his extensive criminal history was apprehended after fleeing from officers who responded to multiple reports of a burglary and disturbance Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 3.

The incidents that led to the man’s arrest happened in the 2900 block of Lanning Avenue in the Parkview area, according to officials.

City of Redding police officers were dispatched to the neighborhood shortly before 2 p.m. after a woman called 911 and reported that Nicholas Dillon Hall, 30, of Redding, was in her backyard attempting to steal items, Redding Police Corporal Chris Mills said after the felon’s arrest.

The victim reported Hall was last seen hiding across the street from her residence.

At about the same time, a second 911 caller reported a disturbance and physical altercation occurring between several men in the same area of the original call.

When officers arrived in the area they spotted Hall fleeing on foot from the area of Kite Lane and Leland Avenue.

“Officers gave chase, but lost sight of (Hall) in the neighborhood,” said Mills; adding that officers quickly set up a perimeter and requested additional resources to the scene to assist in locating Hall.

During the next hour Redding PD officers, with assistance from the Department’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Team, K-9 Chase, and California Highway Patrol Air Operations, conducted a thorough search of the area.

With help and guidance from the UAV and CHP Aviation Crew from above, K-9 Chase eventually located Hall, “who had concealed himself between thick bushes and the wall of a residence,” Mills described.

“Hall refused the commands of the officers on scene, and was apprehended with the assistance (of) K-9 Chase,” said Mills.

“With specialized Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s), operators are able to quickly deploy for an aerial overview of incidents, location of suspects, up-to-the-minute intelligence, crime scene evidence identification, and crime scene photography,” RPD Sgt. Chris Smyrnos previously told SCNS of the Department’s UAV Team.

Officers were familiar with Hall, who had two active felony arrest warrants related to incidents that occurred in January and February.

The warrant related to the Jan. 1st incident was issued after Hall eluded officers who were investigating a recently reported robbery, according to Mills. The other warrant was related to a Feb. 1st incident where Hall was the reported suspect in a residential burglary, and reportedly made criminal threats against another victim while brandishing a knife.

Based on their investigation, officers arrested Hall and he was booked into Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of making criminal threats, burglary, and resisting arrest. He was also booked on his felony warrants.

Online jail records indicate Hall remains in custody where he is being held without bail.
