Toddler dead after running behind backing-up car driven by teen

THERMAL, Calif. — Authorities say a one-year-old child was killed after being struck by a vehicle outside a Thermal residence early Tuesday evening, Feb. 2. The fatal accident happened in the area of Shore Oasis Street, northeast of S. Marina and Harbor drives, near Salton City west of the Salton Sea.

California Highway Patrol El Centro area said yesterday that a vehicle was backing out of a residence around 7 p.m., when the toddler darted behind the car. After running behind the moving vehicle, the child was knocked down and then run over.

According to CHP, the one-year-old succumbed to their injuries and passed away.

The vehicle was being driven by a 17-year-old, who remained at the scene and cooperated with officers during their investigation.

It was not immediately known how or if the teen and toddler were related and the young victim’s name and gender have not been released.

CHP’s investigation into the accident is ongoing.

This is a developing story that will be updated as new information becomes available.

Trevor’s assignments included Corrections, Patrol, DUI Enforcement, Boat and Personal Water-Craft based Lake Patrol, Off-Road Vehicle Enforcement, Problem Oriented Policing Team, and Personnel/Background Investigations. He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 30 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 18 grandchildren.
