CHP motor officer seriously injured after sideswiped on I-10 in Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Calif. — A CHP motorcycle officer was seriously injured and remains hospitalized with major injuries after he was sideswiped by a car and thrown from his motorcycle Saturday afternoon, Feb. 6.

The crash, which led to two other vehicles colliding, happened on the westbound I-10 near state route 62, in the unincorporated Riverside County area of Whitewater, according to California HIghway Patrol.

CHP officers were first alerted to the crash at 1:37 p.m., CHP Officer Maclis has since reported.

Multiple units and other emergency personnel responded to the scene, where they found four vehicles, including the officer’s 2014 Harley Davidson, that had crashed.

The 31-year-old motor officer from San Bernardino was down in the lanes of travel and while other officers comforted him medical personnel began treating him. He was later rushed to an area trauma center with injuries Maclis described as major.

During their subsequent investigation, CHP determined that the motor officer was thrown from his motorcycle after being side-swipped by a 2012 Lexus driven by a 39-year-old Cherry Valley man.

The driver of the vehicle who struck the officer was not injured in the accident, which led to a chain-reaction crash between two other vehicles, whose drivers swerved while trying to avoid the initial collision and the officer after he was ejected from his motorcycle onto the highway.

Both of those vehicles, described as a 2017 Dodge Ram and 2004 Toyota, were damaged but no injuries were reported as a result of the secondary crash, according to Maclis.
