UPDATE: Menifee motorcyclist, 36, ID’d after deadly crash

UPDATED: Wednesday, March 10, 2:05 p.m., With coroner’s release of information.

MENIFEE, Calif. — A local motorcyclist was killed in a two-vehicle collision in Menifee Monday evening, May 8. The deadly accident, which forced the hours-long closure of Newport Road, happened between Bradley and Winterhawk roads, according to officials.

Area resident Jay Soto, who said the fatal crash happened directly in front of her and her son as they drove past the Newport Plaza, later wrote on social media, “(I) watched this man die tonight.”

“(It was) truly heartbreaking,” Soto wrote; adding that she was praying for the deceased rider as well as his family.

City of Menifee Police and Fire personnel were dispatched to the scene around 6:49 p.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle collision involving a motorcycle and other vehicle.

When officials arrived they found the critically injured motorcyclist down in the roadway. The rider’s orange and black sport bike was found nearby.

Depite life-saving efforts, the motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the scene.

Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner officials have since identified Charles Hannem, 36, of Menifee, as the motorcyclist killed in the collision.

A coroner’s release indicated he was pronounced deceased at 6:55 p.m.

Members of Menifee PD’s Traffic Reconstruction Team were summoned to the scene and have assumed the investigation into the fatal collision.

During their subsequent investigation, officials called for the temporary closure of Newport Road, between Bradley and Winterhawk roads.

Menifee PD is continuing to investigate the cause of the deadly crash and have not released any further information.

Trevor’s assignments included Corrections, Patrol, DUI Enforcement, Boat and Personal Water-Craft based Lake Patrol, Off-Road Vehicle Enforcement, Problem Oriented Policing Team, and Personnel/Background Investigations. He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 30 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 18 grandchildren.
