MORENO VALLEY, Calif. — Authorities say a man was killed in a two-vehicle traffic collision involving a tractor-trailer combo and an SUV in Moreno Valley early Saturday morning, March 6.

Officials have said that excessive speed was a contributing factor in the deadly accident, which happened on the eastbound SR-60, approximately one-half mile west of Frederick Street/Pidgeon Pass.

CHP-Riverside, Cal Fire-Riverside, and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene around 2:42 a.m. after receiving reports of the collision, CHP Officer Juan Quintero has since reported.

When officials arrived they found a heavily-damaged, white, 2018 Maserati SUV over the side of the freeway and down an embankment. The SUV’s front end was found resting against a tree and the vehicle’s roof had nearly been torn completely off.

The driver and sole occupant of the Maserati was found unconscious but breathing and was “severely injured,” Quintero described.

He was eventually extricated from the wrecked Maserati and transported to Riverside University Health System (RUHS) Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner officials have since identified Timothy Carr, 36, of Moreno Valley, as the driver of the Maserati who was killed in the collision. A coroner’s release indicated Carr was pronounced deceased by hospital staff at 3:17 a.m.

The driver of the semi-truck involved in the collision was found a short distance away, parked on the right shoulder at the Pigeon Pass Road off-ramp, according to Quintero; who said the big rig driver was cooperating with CHP’s investigation.

During their subsequent investigation, Quintero said officers located evidence at the scene that suggested the Maserati was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed in the number four lane just prior to the collision. The tractor-trailer combo was also traveling eastbound in the number three lane, just ahead and to the left of the oncoming Maserati.

“For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the Maserati steered his vehicle to the left and struck the right rear of the semi-trailer,” Quintero explained; adding, “The force of the impact separated the roof of the Maserati, and was torn open to the rear seating area.”
