Deputy hospitalized, suspect dead after shots fired during Perris standoff

PERRIS, Calif. — Authorities say that shots exchanged between an armed suspect and deputies during a barricaded standoff left a deputy injured and hospitalized Sunday, March 21. The deputy remains hospitalized in good condition, according to Riverside Sheriff’s Public Information Officer C. Sgt. Deanna Pecoraro, who did not specify the nature or extent of the deputy’s injuries.

The suspect who allegedly fired upon deputies was later found inside his barricaded residence, dead from a gunshot wound, according to the Sergeant; who did not say if the fatal gunshot injury was believed to be self-inflicted or sustained during the exchange of gunfire with the deputies.

Deputies from the Perris Sheriff’s Station were conducting a follow-up investigation in the area of Bond Road and San Jacinto Avenue regarding a wanted suspect around 9:15 a.m., Pecoraro said of the incident that led to the fatal encounter.

“While deputies were on the property of a residence in the 100 block of Bond Road, they were fired upon,” Pecoraro explained; adding, “At that time a deputy-involved shooting occurred.”

After the initial shooting, deputies put out an “officer needs help” call, which was broadcast to multiple area law enforcement agencies.

As a Sheriff’s aviation crew in a helicopter circled overhead, the neighborhood soon filed with other deputies and Special Enforcement Bureau members – who arrived at the scene with multiple armored rescue vehicles, as well as official vehicles from multiple surrounding area law enforcement agencies.

“Armored rescue vehicles were used to extract multiple deputies who were pinned down on the property and unable to get to safety,” Pecoraro explained.

“One of our deputies, who had a non-life-threatening injury, was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment,” the Sergeant continued.

A perimeter was established around the residence where the armed suspect was believed to be barricaded and all surrounding homes within the neighborhood were evacuated.

As the standoff was continuing, Sheriff’s officials posted a release to social media that read, “We are investigating a deputy-involved shooting in the city of Perris off of San Jacinto Ave. and Bond Road. One deputy was injured. Suspect is armed and dangerous and believed to be contained. Further info to follow. Avoid area.”

After several unsuccessful attempts were made to have the suspect exit the residence, deputies from the department’s Hazardous Device Team deployed a robot to make entry into the home to search for the suspect.

“The robot located the adult male suspect deceased from a gunshot wound,” said Pecoraro; who added that a handgun was located at the scene.

The deceased suspect’s name has not yet been released, pending further investigation and notification of the man’s family.

Other than the one injured and hospitalized deputy, no other deputies or citizens were injured during this incident and Pecoraro later said there were no outstanding suspects and no further threat to the public.
