Deputies with the San Jacinto Sheriff’s Station spotted a stolen vehicle around 10:30 a.m. and initiated a pursuit when the suspect refused to stop for officers’ lights and sirens, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant J. Wade Lenton later said of the incident and arrest.

The driver, since identified as Noel Avalos, a 28-year-old San Jacinto area transient, fled from deputies in an extremely reckless manner, without regard for the safety of pursuing officials and other citizens.

The pursuing deputies discontinued the chase about five minutes later, once a Sheriff’s helicopter was in place to follow the suspect, according to Lenton.

The helicopter continued following the fleeing man into the Beaumont area until a California Highway Patrol officer assumed the pursuit as the stolen vehicle headed westbound on Interstate 10, east of Oak Valley Parkway.

“The CHP officer chased the vehicle until it collided with several civilian vehicles on Interstate 10,” said Lenton.

It was not immediately known if any citizens were injured in the collision.

Avalos was taken into custody without further incident and later turned over to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department for the criminal investigation and booking.

Avalos was later booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility for felony evading, vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, and parole violations.

Online jail records indicate Avalos remains in custody, where he is being held without bail.
