Perris search warrant at Hemet home leads to arrest

HEMET, Calif. — Although few details have been released, authorities today confirmed to RCNS that an early morning search warrant served at a Hemet residence Friday morning, April 23, resulted in the arrest of a man wanted in connection to a 2020 Perris shooting investigation.

Heavy sheriff and police activity at the residence, along with flash bangs that rattled the small neighborhood, were reported by area residents after the incident, which occurred on Viento Drive, northeast of N Lyon and W. Menlo avenues.

Area residents have since reported that around 6 a.m., numerous marked and unmarked patrol vehicles from multiple agencies, along with at least two armored tactical rescue vehicles, a Sheriff’s helicopter, SWAT members and other sheriff’s resources, converged on the home before surrounding it and closing parts of the neighborhood to through traffic.

During the incident, area residents who awoke to the activity were told to return to their homes and to stay locked inside their residences until further notice.

According to one witness who requested to not be named publicly, over the next thirty minutes she could hear officials using a public address (PA) system to hail a man, since identified as 18-year-old, Daniel Ricky Ortega.

After threatening to send a dog into the residence, the first of four people exited the home, according to the witness. That person was later confirmed to be the man officials were searching for. Area residents have since said Ortega had been renting a room at the home.

As the helicopter and a Sheriff’s drone continued to monitor the scene from above, three other people, including an adult male, juvenile male, and then adult female, eventually exited the home. Each were briefly detained before later being released.

The alleged suspect was later booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon/firearm and shooting at an inhabited dwelling.

Online jail records indicate he remains in custody in lieu of $50,000 bail or bond and is scheduled to be arraigned at the Riverside Hall Of Justice on April 27.

Contacted for further information, Riverside Sheriff’s Media Information Officer Sergeant Lionel Murphy said the search warrant was part of an ongoing investigation and that no further details were immediately available.
