Region 2 Gang Task Force officers were conducting patrol operations around 9:30 p.m. when they attempted to conduct a traffic enforcement stop of an ATV that was being illegally operated on city roads at the intersection of West Nicolet and 2nd streets, Region 2 Gang Task Force Sergeant Mike Bennett has since reported.

The driver, later identified as Deshawn Terrell Smith, 34, of Banning, failed to stop and fled from officers at a high rate of speed.

Deshawn Smith was arrested after fleeing from Gang Task Force officers on an ATV and running into a Banning home. He was found to be in possession of a backpack that held a loaded handgun, cocaine and marijuana, and $1,100 cash. RSO booking photo

“A short vehicle pursuit ensued and concluded in the 400 block of 3rd Street,” Bennett described. “Smith exited the ATV and ran into a residence and threw a backpack he had been wearing.”

“Gang Task Force Officers pursued after Smith and he was placed under arrest,” Bennett continued.

During a subsequent search of Smith’s backpack, officers found a loaded 9mm handgun. Officers also discovered Smith was in possession of 3.1 grams of cocaine, more than an ounce of marijuana, vials of liquid THS, several zip lock baggies, and $1,100.00 of U.S Currency.

Smith was booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility on suspicion of evading officers, felony possession of a firearm, possession of an un-registered firearm, possession of controlled substances while armed, and transportation of narcotics for sales.

Online jail records indicate he was released the day after his arrest after posting $30,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned at an unspecified court on Nov. 8.
