UPDATE: Shasta Lake man arrested for 2020 fatal DUI traffic accident that killed friend

REDDING, Calif., — Authorities yesterday arrested a man they say was driving while intoxicated when he ran a red light, struck another vehicle and overturned into a pole Tuesday, Dec. 8. The deadly crash happened at the intersection of Lake Boulevard and Oasis Road, according to officials.

At the time of the fatal accident the suspect, Robert Christopher Maughs, 25, of Shasta Lake City, was already on California Department of Corrections parole for a prior DUI with injuries conviction and was driving on a suspended license, according to officials.

Redding PD’s investigation last December began around 4 p.m. when emergency personnel responded to a two-vehicle traffic collision involving a black Toyota 4-Runner and white Buick Riviera, Redding Police Corporal Michael DiMatteo explained in yesterday’s announcement of Maugh’s Aug. 18 arrest.

Responding officials found the heavily-damaged, nearly unrecognizable Toyota on its passenger-side against a light pole. A white Buick Riviera with major front-end damage was found in the middle of the roadway.

Neither Maughs nor his passenger, 19-year-old, Jimmie Junior Adkison II, of Redding, were wearing seatbelts when the collision occurred and both were critically injured in the accident. Despite life-saving efforts, Adkison succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the scene. Maughs was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries and he has reportedly been undergoing several months of recovery and rehabilitation since last year’s crash.

Although hospitalized with serious injuries, Maughs was found to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the collision and he was released to hospital staff, pending further investigation and his release from doctor’s care.

The other driver injured in the collision, previously identified as 31-year-old Cassandra Petty, was also hospitalized after the collision but has since reportedly recovered from her injuries.

During Redding PD’s investigation, Petty and other witnesses told investigating officers the 4-Runner was traveling northbound on Lake Boulevard when Maughs failed to slow down or stop for a red light and slammed into the Buick as Petty was making a left-hand turn with a green light.

On Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 18, at around 1:20 p.m., Redding Police Department Traffic Unit and Neighborhood Police Unit officers, with assistance from the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office, arrested Maughs for a warrant charging him with murder and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs causing injury. He was later booked into the Shasta County Jail in Redding.

Online jail records indicate he remains in custody, where he is being held without bail.
