After 2-year pandemic hiatus, Intermountain area residents excited to have football – and local coverage – back

INTERMOUNTAIN AREA, Calif. — The small, Intermountain area town of Burney, pop. 3,200, has been abuzz this week with area scholastic sports enthusiasts and local parents talking about the best news for area students since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and public health crisis – the return of local football and other sporting events.

Area residents, who have strongly supported and are enthusiastically welcoming the return of high school football to the Intermountain area with the first games scheduled for tonight, were further excited this week to learn that along with the return of local sporting events, long-time area sports reporter Ron Mosher has joined the SCNS team and will once again be providing coverage for area scholastic sports.

Ron, who previously provided local sports and other news coverage for the Mountain Echo before that paper shuttered its doors in December 2019, recently told SCNS he was excited to be returning to his local sports coverage and was very humbled to hear that area residents were enthusiastically anticipating his return.

He had last provided sports and other news coverage for the Mountain Echo when the owners, Walt and Donna Caldwell, retired after decades of providing quality and thoughtful news coverage to the Intermountain area and beyond.

From the youth sporting enthusiasts just beginning their scholastic sports careers, to the senior players getting ready to head of to college sports, anyone who has ever played for their local school’s teams will recall seeing the ever-present Ron, snapping photos from the sidelines, while he gathered stats on the games. As area residents began to learn that Ron had graciously agreed to begin providing his local sports coverage to SCNS, they were overwhelmingly supportive and excited to hear that he would once again be covering the events.

Former Mountain Echo co-owner Donna was just one of countless long-time locals who were excited to hear of Ron’s return; telling SCNS yesterday, “He was an amazing reporter for the community and an all-around good human being,”

“Ron was the best sports reporter in the state,” Donna opined.

“If you look at his work he covered everything from the toddlers to seniors and covered sporting events and other coverage for three school districts and at least five communities on a weekly basis,” she continued. “On top of that he wrote feature articles on the area and when necessary he covered hard news like accidents, fires and general stories of interest in all of these communities.

Whether covering youth sports or events of community interest, Ron says he always puts his best foot forward and tries to capture the excitement and essence of the event. Ron Mosher photos

Johnson Park resident Amber Montgomery was also excited to hear of Ron’s return to covering local scholastic sporting events.

“Ron was just the best,” the local mother of two enthused.

“When we lost his coverage after our local Mountain Echo paper closed and then COVID hit, it left an enormous void in the community that I never thought would be refilled,” she continued; adding, “So, I couldn’t be happier or more excited!”

Local third-grade Burney Elementary teacher Joy Ford was also pleased at hearing just days ago of Ron’s return, saying, “That’s so great to hear! He was the best and just a great guy who loves serving his community.”

“We could not ask for better sports coverage for the Intermountain area,” she continued. “Nobody knows local scholastic sports better than him!”

For now, Ron will initially only be providing post-game coverage and statistics while his at-game photography is temporarily on hold due to some ongoing health issues. So, anyone with a camera who attends these games and is willing to share those photos with SCNS and the community is encouraged to contact SCNS owner Trevor Montgomery.

About Ron, from the man himself:

I began doing sports coverage since the days of Dennis Smith at the Intermountain News in Burney in the mid 1960s through the mid 1970s. I took a long break after moving to the Bay Area, where I had an eight year stint with the San Francisco Giants front office as accounting and data processing manager – so my life has pretty much revolved around balls – footballs, basketballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, softballs, baseballs and the kids who toss ’em, catch ’em and excel in sports.

I returned to the Intermountain area in the 1990s and restarted my sports life in the area by working for Donna and Walt Caldwell and their Mountain Echo newspaper, retiring a few years ago after 20-plus years chasing kids all over northern California covering their antics in playing games.

I have a love for all three of the Intermountain area schools, having attended Big Valley elementary through fourth grade, graduating from Burney elementary and then becoming a 4-year Fall River Bulldog, graduating in 1961… yep, I’m an old guy.

But, I’m an old guy who’s glad to be returning to the keyboard in following Intermountain Area sports and the kids who play ’em… remember: Find something round… you’ll have a ball!

From covering local sporting events to area community interest stories to breaking news, Ron says he loves being able to provide photos to the community he loves so much, and is excited to continue serving his community while covering scholastic sports for the Intermountain area.
