City of Redding police and fire personnel were dispatched to the 3300 block of South Market Street at around 11 p.m. after receiving reports of a blood covered man crawling in the roadway, Redding Police Sergeant Rob Garnero said last night.

When officials arrived they found an unresponsive man with multiple stab wounds laying within the roadway. He was rushed to an area hospital as a trauma alert for treatment of his critical injuries, where he remains unidentified.

“Police have not yet been able to verify the victim’s identity,” Garnero explained.

The Redding Police Detective Division responded to investigate the stabbing and had the southbound lanes of South Market Street, between Ellis and Grange streets, closed to through traffic from 11:15 p.m. until Thursday morning at 5:40 a.m.

Based on video surveillance and evidence found on-scene, it was determined that the stabbing occurred within the parking lot of a business at 3360 South Market Street, which was closed at the time of the stabbing.

“The video depicted the victim being viciously attacked by the suspect for unknown reasons,” said Garnero. “Following the attack, the suspect fled the area on foot and the victim ran into the southbound lanes of South Market Street where he collapsed from his injuries.”

As detectives searched the area surrounding the crime scene for clues, they spotted a 17-year-old male juvenile who matched the suspect description walking on Terrill Street, just one block south of the stabbing.

Detectives detained the juvenile and observed the clothing he was wearing matched that of the suspect on video, according to the Sargeant; who added, “He also had what appeared to be blood stains on his clothing and person.”

Officers ultimately arrested the juvenile, whose name and photo were not released due to his age, and he was later booked into the Shasta County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of attempted murder.

“The juvenile’s motive for the stabbing remains unclear,” said Garnero.

Anyone with information about this stabbing is asked to call the Redding Police Department at (530) 225-4200. Callers can refer to incident file number 21R055855 and can remain anonymous.
