Riverside man, 57, fatally struck by car was possibly leaving scene of earlier SR-91 collision

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Authorities say a motorist turned pedestrian was killed after he was struck by a vehicle in the aftermath of another, earlier collision early Sunday morning, Oct. 17.

For reasons not yet known, after the initial two-car collision the victim exited his vehicle and crossed the freeway to the opposing lanes of travel, at which time he was struck by another oncoming vehicle traveling within the freeway’s High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane, according to officials.

California Highway Patrol, along with City of Riverside Fire Department and other emergency personnel, were dispatched to the westbound SR-91, about one-quarter mile west of Adams Avenue, around 4:47 a.m., CHP Officer Juan Quintero has since reported.

“CHP-Riverside units received a call of a solo vehicle traffic collision involving a dark colored Chrysler 300 on SR-91 westbound,” Quintero explained. “The call quickly escalated to a multi-vehicle collision blocking multiple lanes on both the eastbound and westbound sides of the freeway.”

Although some reports have indicated that one of the involved vehicles was possibly seen traveling the wrong way on the freeway prior to or immediately following the initial collision, that details could not be confirmed as of this article.

When officials arrived they found a mortally injured man down on the eastbound side of the highway who succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the scene.

The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has since identified Kevin Marbury, 57, of Riverside, as the pedestrian killed in the collision. A Coroner’s release indicated he was pronounced deceased at 5:25 a.m.

During their subsequent investigation, CHP determined that Marbury, who was driving a Chrysler 300, was involved in a two vehicle crash with a Porsche, rendering the Chrysler disabled.

After the initial collision, Marbury exited his vehicle and crossed over the center median, where he proceeded onto the eastbound side of the highway, where he was struck by a Nissan Sentra traveling in the eastbound HOV lane, according to Quintero; who declined to speculate what the victim’s intentions were when he left the scene of the crash.

Area resident Terry Acer, who said she did not see the initial accident but witnessed the fatal, secondary collision, later said she could not say for sure what Marbury’s intentions were when he fled across the freeway in the moments before he was struck but explained, “Whatever he was thinking, he didn’t seem interested in sticking around.”

The multiple-vehicle collisions forced the temporary partial closure of both directions of the highway, with some area residents and commuters later reporting delays in their travel times.

Officials are awaiting autopsy and toxicology reports to determine if alcohol or drug intoxication were contributing factors in the fatal accident.

CHP’s investigation is active and ongoing and officials have not released any further details.
