Missing person report leads to suspicious death investigation after body found near Keswick Reservoir

REDDING, Calif., — Authorities today confirmed their investigation is continuing after a man’s body was found during a missing person’s investigation Sunday, Oct. 17. While officials declined to provide details regarding the circumstances of the victim’s passing, they say the case is now being treated as suspicious in nature.

The victim, who had been listed as a missing person by his family after he failed to return home from a fishing trip over the weekend, was found deceased and his vehicle was recovered in the area of Keswick Reservoir near the Chappie/Shasta Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area.

Shasta County sheriff’s deputies began looking into the disappearance of 35-year-old Christopher Allen Catterson of Redding, around 11:46 a.m. Saturday morning after concerned family members reported him as missing, Shasta County Sheriff’s Office has since said of their ongoing investigation.

Upon contacting Catterson’s family, deputies learned that the missing man had gone fishing earlier that morning, but had never returned home.

Deputies learned Catterson was possibly in the area of Keswick Reservoir and responded to the area, eventually finding Catterson’s black 2010 GMC Sierra, according to officials, who said deputies also located Catterson’s lifeless body and determined he was already deceased.

Based on circumstances and evidence found at the scene, which officials did not specify or explain in detail, detectives with the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit responded to the location and took over the investigation.

Officials did not specify how Catterson died and have said an autopsy has been scheduled.

Citing the early and ongoing nature of the investigation declined to provide any further details at this time.
