PERRIS, Calif., — Authorities say a man is in custody after attacking another man with a machete in an unincorporated part of Perris yesterday afternoon, Monday, Nov. 8.

The victim sustained significant injuries to his arm during the attack, but deputies were able to immediately render aid at the scene and stop the bleeding prior to the arrival of paramedics. The victim is expected to survive, according to officials.

Deputies from the Perris Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to the 17100 block of Hidalgo Drive at 12:40 p.m. after receiving reports of an assault with a deadly weapon, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Jeremy Bracey has since said of the incident and arrest.

When deputies arrived they located a victim with a moderate arm injury as a result of being struck with a machete and they immediately rendered medical aid to the man’s arm. They managed to control the bleeding prior to the arrival of responding paramedics and the victim was transported via ambulance to a hospital for further treatment of his injuries; which Bracey said were not considered life threatening.

Although the suspect had fled the scene prior to their arrival, during their subsequent investigation deputies identified the suspect as Loren Steven Montoya, 40, of Perris, and began searching the surrounding neighborhoods for him.

Deputies ultimately located Montoya in the 22000 block of Gavilan Road, less than a quarter-mile from where the machete attack occurred. He was arrested without incident and later booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm.

Online jail records indicate he remains in custody in lieu of $25,000 bail or bond and is scheduled to be arraigned at the Riverside Hall Of Justice in Riverside tomorrow.
