Woman fights off Riverside carjacker – Local man arrested

RIVERSIDE, Calif., — Authorities say an intended carjacking victim was able to fight off her attacker, a man with multiple arrest warrants, who was later arrested after fleeing from and then resisting officers who responded to the violent incident.

The attempted carjacking happened at a Riverside Walgreens, in the 8900 block of Trautwein Road, Wednesday evening, Nov. 17. The alleged suspect was arrested a short distance away after he was spotted walking in the area by a Riverside PD aviation crew.

City of Riverside police officers were dispatched to the business shortly before 7 p.m. after receiving reports of an attempted carjacking that had just occurred, Riverside PD has since said of the incident and arrest.

Arriving at the scene within minutes, officers learned the suspect had already fled the scene on foot.

While officers were interviewing the victim, a Riverside PD aviation crew spotted an adult male matching the suspect’s description walking in a parking lot in a business complex across from Walgreens.

When patrol officers attempted to contact the man, since identified as Shelton Bobbie Williams, 22, of Riverside, he took off running but was safely detained a short distance away, according to RPD.

During their subsequent investigation, officers learned that before the attempted carjacking, Williams had been watching the intended victim as she entered the Walgreens and was still loitering in the area when the woman exited the business.

As the victim went to get into her vehicle, Williams ran up from behind her and attempted to drag her out of her vehicle.

“The victim was able to scream and fight off the suspect,” RPD described; adding that when he was not able to pull the victim from her car due to the attention she was drawing by her screams for help, he abandoned his attempted carjacking and fled the parking lot on foot.

Based on their investigation, officers arrested Williams and he was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of attempted carjacking and resisting arrest.

Online jail records revealed a host of other warrant-related charges; including multiple counts of indecent exposure, lewd conduct in public, multiple counts of vandalism, multiple counts of obstructing or resisting a peace officer, providing false ID to a peace officer, trespassing, battery, and theft.

He remains in custody in lieu of $60,000 bail or bond.
