California Highway Patrol, Cal Fire – Riverside, and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene shortly before 5:30 a.m. after receiving reports of the early morning collision, according to a CHP incident log and a subsequent Cal Fire social media release.

When officials arrived they found two involved vehicles, described by one witness as a full-size Dodge Ram and smaller Nissan pickup truck, with vehicle parts and debris scattered across the two lane highway.

Despite life saving efforts, one of the drivers succumbed to their injuries and passed away at the scene. A second driver was airlifted to an area trauma center with injuries that Cal Fire later described as moderate.

The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office today identified David Land, 73, as the man killed in the collision. A Coroner’s release indicated he was pronounced deceased at 5:50 a.m.

While officials worked at the scene they implemented one-way traffic control in an effort to ease congestion, although area residents reported significant delays in their travel times.

CHP’s investigation into the cause of the deadly crash is continuing.
