Murrieta PD’s investigation began around 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 12, after officers responded to the report of an abandoned vehicle on Jefferson Avenue near Fig Street, Lieutenant Phil Gomez has since said of the murder investigation and arrest.

When officers arrived, they found the vehicle running with its keys in the ignition and a flat front tire.

Officers responded to the registered owner’s Murrieta address on nearby Ivy Street, where they found signs of a violent struggle and soon located a deceased male inside the home.

The murdered man has since been identified as 54-year-old Murrieta resident Ricardo Palmerin.

While officials were beginning their investigation, a neighbor showed up at the home and told officers that his pickup truck had been just stolen from his home. He also told officers he had identified the man who stole his vehicle as Carlos.

As their investigation continued, detectives learned Carlos had fled the country and was possibly hiding in Mexico.

“On the evening of 12/13/21, Carlos Palmerin was detained at the San Ysidro Border Crossing as he attempted to re-enter the United States,” Gomez explained; saying Murrieta police detectives responded to the border crossing and took Carlos into custody.

Carlos was then brought back to the Murrieta Police Department where he was interviewed by detectives.

Online jail records indicate he remains in custody at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning and is scheduled to be arraigned at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta on Jan 3.
