Deputies from the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station, Cal Fire – Riverside, and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene around 5:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a major injury collision involving a bicyclist, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Morando has since reported.

When officials arrived they found a bicyclist and his bike down in the roadway with the involved driver and his vehicle nearby.

“The bicyclist was found to have major injuries and Cal-Fire personnel attempted life-saving measures, but the bicyclist succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased,” said Morando.

The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has since identified Jason Navoy, a 45-year-old resident of Jurupa Valley, as the bicyclist killed in the collision. A Coroner’s release indicated he passed away at 5:37 p.m.

Based on the circumstances, the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation.

“The driver of a small sedan was not injured and remained at the crash site,” Morando continued; adding, “He cooperated with the investigation, was interviewed, and was released at the scene.”

While there are no bike lanes along the section of Mission Boulevard where the deadly collision occurred, officials did not specify if the bicyclist was traveling along the side of the road or within the lanes of travel when he was fatally struck.

During their investigation, Traffic Team members determined that the bicyclist had been traveling eastbound on Mission Boulevard approaching Tyrolite Street when he was struck by the eastbound motorist from behind, according to Morando; who said alcohol and/or drug intoxication have not yet been ruled out as contributing factors in the fatal accident.

While officials worked at the scene, they called for the complete closure of Mission Boulevard between Pyrite and Caleb streets, but the roadway has since been reopened.
